50,000+ spectators attend Bray Summerfest Air Display

* Bray hosts Ireland's largest and only free air display event
* Highlights include the elite of the Irish Air Corps, Aer Arann's lower-emissions ATR72-500, and the world-class Blades Formation Team

Sunday 27th July 2008: Over 50,000 spectators attended today's Bray Summerfest Air Display, now Ireland's largest and only free air display event.

Boasting the best in Irish aerobatics, this is only the second year that Bray Summerfest has staged this high-flying event.

Highlights of the two-and-a-half hour display off Bray Seafront included the elite jet and helicopter piloting of the Irish Air Corps, thrilling drops by the Army Black Knights Parachute Display Team, and a spectacular combination Sea Air Rescue (SAR) Display with the Irish Coast Guard Service and the RNLI Dun Laoghaire Lifeboat. Aer Arann showcased its all-new lower-emissions ATR72-500, which is one of the most eco-friendly commercial airliners currently in operation.

Participating Irish aerobatics specialists included Dave Bruton in an ultra-rare Russian Sukhoi SU26, Gerry Humphries in a Pipistrel Motor Glider, and Eddie Goggins, who opened the display at 3pm with a spectacular feat of sky-writing at 5,000 ft to welcome the 50,000-plus spectators.

The two-hour plus display climaxed in spectacular fashion with the world-class formation flying of ex-Red Arrow pilots from the visiting Blades formation display group.

The Bray Summerfest Air Display also included static displays by the Irish Armed Forces of Bray's Promenade, a visit by the Naval Services LE Emer, and a display of vintage vehicles. Families thrilled at Ireland's biggest seaside funfair, with the Air Display's best spectator seat 50 metres high in the skies - from the top of Ireland's largest Jubilee Ferris Wheel, located for the first time ever in Ireland on Bray's beach!

Organisers had expected crowds in excess of 30,000 to attend this afternoon's event, however with the sun blazing onto Bray beach, it is estimated a total of 50,000 spectators spent the afternoon on Bray Beach and Promenade.

Sunday's all-free Air Display was sponsored by The Porterhouse Brewing Company and is part of this year's Bray Summerfest, the biggest free festival in Ireland. Last weekend over 120,000 visitors attended Bray Summerfest's massive beach party, which included the best in live music, plus US women's beach volleyball.
